We’ve all heard the slurs and felt the sting of prejudice. We’ve endured the caricatures in the media. Whenever Hollywood wants to convey that a character is, shall we say, of “limited intelligence,” they slap a Southern accent on him. Boom: instant stupidity. Almost without exception, White Southerners are portrayed as right-wing, uneducated & backward. And always racist.
Yes, good ol’ Hollywood. Notorious among Southerners for its violence to our accents (see link), Hollywood and the mainstream media also stumble in their portrayals of the Southern character. Throughout history, Southerners have made important and lasting impacts on our country’s history, and have virtually defined American culture. (Try to imagine the U.S. without blues music, jazz, rock and roll, or William Faulkner.) But you wouldn’t know it from watching modern American media.
The mission of SouthernKind is to heal racial divisions by reviving 19th century-style populism in the South and to promote, through our products and our ideas, the following truths:
-- The American South is my beloved homeland
-- Throughout history, Black and White Southerners have made
essential contributions to the United States and American culture
-- The American South is routinely maligned in the media and this
should be corrected
-- Racism is NOT an essential part of the Southern identity
-- Many important aspects of Southern culture and identity (e.g.,
Southern accents) were derived from African culture and influence
-- Blacks and Whites of the South have more commonalities than
-- Amid what sociologists call the “death of regionalism,” Southern
identity and culture should be celebrated and preserved
